Can somebody please direct me to that part of the tutorial(?) that deals with recording a track from the internet (YouTube). Tks
On Windows it’s WASAPI (loopback).
Make sure to turn off Software Playthrough because it creates an internal feedback loop playing what you you’re hearing and while re-playing what you’ve just recorded and recording it again.
I wonder if there hasn’t been a case of lines getting crossed here - or I don’t understand the forum mechanics.
This ay be hopelessly behind the times but just in case…
There are (or were) some machines where the sound card doesn’t give access to Audacity, eg Lenovo laptops. I forget why (it started IIRC around Win 10 or poss even Win XP). This affected me way back and ever since I’ve run with an intermediate piece of software which captures the audio into virtual cables and re-routes it. It’s called “Virtual Audio Cable” or VAC. This has become so much of part of my set-up that I haven’t even bothered to find out if it is still needed on my current Dell. I do a lot of recording off the internet.
If you think this might be where your issue lies, reply and I’ll try to expand.
(PS: I’ll probably ignore messages telling me I don’t need to do this, not out of spite but out of laziness and not wanting ti change what works.)
Unless your needs are VERY specific, I’d always advise downloading from YouTube using something like Clipgrab rather than recording. Recording in real-time is a massive time sink.

Tks. To be truthful I have never heard of Clipgrab and one is naturally cautious with unknown downloads. Whereas I have been vaguely aware of Audacity for years. My needs are pretty basic - just to record something as is on line without any bells and whistles.
The beauty of Clipgrab is that it lets you download only the audio part of a video if you want but it’s well suited to video too. In any event, my impatience would always make me tend towards downloads rather than recording. Each to his own, of course. As an alternative to Audacity, you might want to have a go with Ocenaudio. I find it better than Audacity for SOME things.
Did you say which OS you use?
I had a quick look at the reviews. Clipgrab appears to have security concerns (PUP’s et c).
I think there’s a block on downloading what I want to listen to which is why I was looking at Audacity. If the recording process takes a bit longer I can live with it. Taking account of everything that is posted here
If you post a link (or send it in a PM) I’m willing to try it.
Fair enough, if you are happy with that, go for it.

I hope these work. Tks
I got that with Clipgrab, no bother. Do you want me to record it for you with Audacity/Ocenaudio while you find an answer? Or I can send you the downloaded m4a file.
