Importing MP3 gives flat line

Audacity 2.1.0 - exe installer
PC Win 10

This just happened. Importing MP3s look like they are going to open fine, correct length and all, but Audacity just shows a flat line, no audio at all. These are good MP3s and play on other platforms. On the other hand I can import aup files and they open just fine.

May have something to do with win10 since I just upgraded BUT, Audacity was able to open these same files like normal last night with WIN 10 running. Hmmmm. Thanks for a simple solution.

You do have to keep that straight. MP3 files import, AUP files open. You can also double click on an AUP file and if it can open, it will.

When was the last time you restarted the machine? I make it a point to do that at least once a week when I do my backups, updates, etc.

I use 2.1.0 because I customized it and didn’t need anything in 2.1.1.

Look at Edit > Preferences… then “Directories”. This shows the temporary folder Audacity records or imports to before you save an Audacity project. Make sure you have permission to write to that folder (right-click over it in File Explorer, then choose “Properties”).

Also make sure some security app is not deleting your temporary folder contents to “help” you. If that is the problem, change the Audacity temporary directory to one that does not have “temp” in its name (typing in the name directly is the best way). If you have Norton, you can turn off its Windows temporary file cleaner.
