What’s the format you are trying to import? For many compressed you’ll need to install the optional FFMPEG import/export library.

Did you try a normal import or did you import “raw” data?
More likely, the file is not getting decompressed properly. Then whatever you get, the whole thing is shown in the Audacity window.
