I am currently running Audacity “2.0.1”.
I had a song recorded, I saved and closed my laptop. Screen froze when I opened it an hour later. Now when I try and open the .aup file it gives me a unknown file type error. I have the .aup file, and data files all there untouched. What could be going wrong?
Restart the machine. You may be trying to use a partially damaged Audacity. It will be interesting to see if Audacity restarts after the machine comes back up.
Oh, we need the Windows version.

Audacity 2.0.1 is old now. I suggest you obtain the latest 2.1.0 from http://web.audacityteam.org/download.
