I have recorded over a100 records with no problem. Now i get a loud howling noise when i push record whether the disc is playing or not. The stylus is fine the problem is elsewhere.

Do you use SoundFlower to record Internet Audio?
Do you use Skype?
I’m betting you’re recording from your built-in microphone and not the turntable system. If you also have your speakers on so you can hear what the record is doing, that’s the feedback path.
Audacity > Preferences > Devices > Recording: USB Audio Device (or whatever your turntable looks like to the system)
Obviously, if that setting says “Built-In Microphone,” that’s the problem.
If that’s not it, then you need to describe your system: Which computer, what OS, which turntable? USB?

Thanks for your help. Somehow after recording hundreds of records the settings changed. Thanks to you the problem is solved
