how to record audio from youtube

macOS 10.15.4 (Catalina)
Audacity 2.3.3

I want to record sound that is playing on my macOS (Macbook Pro) to no vail for the moment.

I tried to install SoundFlower but it fails with installing SoundFlowerBed which seems to be hopelessly outdated (2014).

Any clues how to get this working?

Thanks, but sorry, it doesn’t fit my environment: Catalina 10.15.4.

I’m tweaking around with SoundFLower and SoundFlowerbed but can’t find a foolproof tutorial with step by step instructions.

Have you tried iShowU Audio Capture? Soundflower has not been updated in years and probably doesn’t work on Catalina.

Will give that a try, thanks. I was already quite close to get it working (Soundflower and SoundflowerBed). The latter shows up in the menubar
and I can define a multichannel device in Audio-MIDI Setup. But running sound through it give an immediate feedback loop and it starts screaming loud so that all I can do is quit SoundflowerBed.

I got it working with Soundflower and SoundflowerBed.

Audacity 2.3.3
Catalina 10.15.4
MacBook Pro mid 2014
SoundflowerBed 2.0.0
Soundflower 2.0b2

SoundflowerBed->Route Soundflower(2Ch) to Built-in Output
System->Sound->Output Soundflower(2Ch)
Audio-Midi Setup Soundflower(2Ch) as speaker out, Mic as Mic.

Audacity:

There’s also Blackhole:

https://github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole

Routes up to 16 channels between applications.

It’s haunted. I’m trying again after I last posted the above, and I don’t see any input meter working in audacity when having the same settings as I found out above. Recording doesn’t work. What could I be doing wrong?
Fired up a YT clip, can listen to it through the Macs built-in speakers.

Any clues how I could get it working?

I got mine working by setting up an Aggregate Device in Audio MIDI setup.
It’s comprised of Built-in Output, IShowU Audio Capture, and Built-in Microphone.

When I’m recording from Spotify, the system audio is iShowU.

Audacity is set up so that Input is the Aggregate Device. I haven’t stumbled on how to hear it at the same time, but I can see that the waveform is appearing in the track window. HTH. :slight_smile:
