how record off other programs using audacity.

how do i record music from other programs that’s playing on audacity. the mixer toolbar won’t give me the option to pick if i want mic or other recording devices.

You want the Stereo Mix or What U Hear inputs. Go to the edit → preferences → audio i/o menu to select the input and output sources.

If you don’t have any inputs that let you record the speaker output, then read this:

Many users remain unable to use that input even after fiddling with their drivers, if that’s the case you have two more options:

  1. Run a cable from the Line Out to the Line In on your soundcard, then set Audacity to record from the Line In (many laptops don’t have a Line In).
  2. Buy a new audio interface. The Behringer UCA202 is only $30, sounds nicer than stock cards, and gives you a Stereo Mix option (as long as you update the drivers).

Thanks a billion!

Is there a way to record streaming audio from say the internet without having to run a physical i/o while still being able to listen to the music through my speakers?

Yes, but it has nothing to do with Audacity. I use two programs that capture the machine sound output without messing with Control Panels, feedback loops, and oddball sound pathways. WireTap for the Mac and Total Recorder for the PC. You can use both of them to schedule a streaming recording, or just press record to capture right now.
