How do I record on a new track

Pardon my ignorance but I am brand new to the software and can’t seem to figure what the issue is. I select new track and tell it mono. I can record that fine. I am a=wanting to add a second track and tell it new track in mono and it adds the track but when I hit record it wants to start recording from where the first track left off even though I click the rewind button or click at 0.0 time. I try and click the new track before recording but that doesn’t help.

Won't record on new track

" The alternative Record New Track action for the Record button is activated by holding Shift while clicking Record. The button changes to display the Record New Track icon. This will start recording in a new track at either the current cursor position or at the beginning of the current selection." Playing and Recording - Audacity Manual There’s also an option in Audacity recording preferences to make “record on a new track” the default.
