How can I mix files?

Last year I used Audacity to mix spooky music and sounds for Halloween. This year, for some reason, if I try to insert silence to move a track to a specific point, it creates silence in the other track as well. How can I resolve this so I can mix my tracks for my party tomorrow night?

I’m using Windows 8 on a HP laptop.

Ensure that you don’t have all of the tracks selected. If all tracks are selected (highlighted) they will all move. If al tracks are selected, left click on a track with the “selection tool” (the “normal” cursor) to unselect them.

Note that you can move audio clips using the Time Shift tool.
