Help !!!

Bonjour à tous,

je travaillais sous XP et sur 1.3.12 sur un gros projet (4 pistes, pleins de sons partout, 1heure et demie de son en continu à ce stade) quand audacity a crashé à l’enregistrement. (message “désolé audacity a rencontré un problème et doit fermer blablabla”).

Résultat à la réouverture : mon projet est troué comme du gruyère. Il y a des silences partout. Des blocs de sons entiers ne sont plus là. Audacty me prévient qu’il a crashé et qu’il a trouvé des dossiers orphelins et me demande ce que je veux faire (effacer les fichiers, travaillers silencieusement autour d’eux, ne rien faire). Il 'a aussi demandé si je voulais garder les silences qui trouent le projet partout “définitivement” ou “pour cette session”.

Pitié, j’ai bossé des heures et des heures et des heures sur ce projet. C’est la 2ème fois qu’audacity fait ça. La 1ère fois j’ai comblé les trous en m’armant de patience parce qu’il n’y en avait pas bcp et que le fichier était moins compliqué, mais là c’est impossible. Si je ne peux pas le récupérer c’est 6 mois de boulot de foutu. Quelqu’un a t-il une solution ???

Je ne peux pas parler français d’origine, mais s’il ya un accident il ya toujours une chance de corruption de fichiers. Est-ce que les fichiers de l’enregistrement perdu, ou les précédentes aussi?

S’il ya un accident lors de l’enregistrement, le problème est généralement avec les pilotes du périphérique audio. Ceux-ci devraient être mis à jour pour les plus récents pour Windows XP telle que fournie par le fabricant du périphérique audio ou carte du son.

Ne pas permettre à “audio Cache” dans les préférences Répertoires parce que cela va empêcher toute récupération d’un enregistrement en cours.

Utilisez le 1.3.13 Nightly Build et mettre à jour régulièrement:

parce qu’il a des améliorations afin d’altérer le redressement et la stabilité.

Il est possible de récupérer manuellement *.au fichiers dans le dossier _DATA du projet, mais il est nécessaire de trier les fichiers en ordre de date et de les renommer:

Dear Gale,

Thank you so much for your reply. I don’t have any problem using English if that’s your language so maybe I can add some information:

I was working on sounds recorded on a minidisc (sony) in wave and transfered to my computer. I was editing them. When I tried to save my project, audacity crashed.
the project had four tracks and a 90 minutes length. 70% of the project is still OK. It’s just in the last blocks of sounds that blocks are pierced with “holes” (silences).
I’ve checked the data. There a re bits and pieces of .aut sounds left in the folders. Actually those you can still hear in my project. But the “silenced” bits are nowhere to be found anymore. It’s as if they had been stored as temp files instead of normal files and had been lost.

Does this make my problem clearer? Could you please retype your sentence “Ne pas permettre à “audio Cache” dans les préférences Répertoires parce que cela va empêcher toute récupération d’un enregistrement en cours.” in English cause I’m not sure I understand (I am not a very advanced computer user…)

NE PAS COCHER la case “Lecture et/ou enrgistrement en mémoire RAM”
cela va empêcher toute récupération d’un enregistrement en cours (sous-entendu, “en cas de crash”).

Pour le reste, je ne saurai intervenir dans votre échange.

Thanks, thegrandwazoo for writing in English. I thought the crash was when recording, but if not it is probably not a problem with your sound device. Unless your computer is too slow to record properly, or you must record to a slow external drive, is better not to enable Audio Cache in the Directories Preferences. All edits will be stored in computer memory if Audio Cache is enabled, and programs can crash when the computer is short of memory.

If Audacity crashes during saving the project it is always possible there will be loss of data because the crash occurs when trying to write the data. When you saw the dialogue telling you there were orphaned and missing files, did you delete the orphaned files and replace the missing ones with silence? If so, that data is probably lost I’m afraid, assuming Audacity was checking it correctly.

If you decided to work around the orphans and temporarily replaced the missing files with silence, then you could try
clicking Aide > Afficher le journal des bogues which should list the file errors. You could search your computer for the missing files it mentions. It is quite possible the files are in the _data folder, but have moved to a folder for one of the other tracks (each track has its own folder inside the _data folder).

If that doesn’t help, you could as a last resort try the suggestion about sorting the .au files into timestamp order then renaming them while they are time-sorted into a consistent alphanumerical sequence (they have random names now). You can then recover all the .au files that are in the _data folder to a recovery.wav file. This will make more sense if you read the Crash Recovery page. This will only help if Audacity has become really confused and the files that are in the _data folder have been misnamed.

Well, I chose not to erase the orphaned files and to work around the remaining files with temporary silences. So I will try your solution with “journal des bogues”. My concern is that when audacity crashed and closed, it also specified that “temp files were now being erased”. So I hope some of these files didn’t end up being labelled as temp and definitly erased…

When you save a project for the first time, the .au files are moved from the temp folder to the project _data folder.

Hi again,

I’ve had time to take up the “debug log” solution.

Unfortunately, 3 types of files are listed there:
-“orphan blocks”
-“missing data files”
-“error 2: files which cannot be found”

I’ve searched samples of all these files and they are easy to find. The problem is actually that they are NOT the sounds really missing in my edit. The sounds listed in the debug log are actually fine in my edit.

So do you see another place/another way to look all these files that have actually become silent in my edit ?? Or have they really been lost in the crash?

I don’t know unless you copy and paste the log into a text file and attach it here, but probably the files which “cannot be found” are the same as the “missing data files”. Orphan blocks are ones present in the _data folder but not in the .aup file (or at least, not in the folder path where where the .aup thinks they should be).

There are several possibilities - the .aup file could be incorrect (it gets written last, after saving the _data folder); and/or some .au files could have been destroyed in the crash, so they don’t exist any more; and/or all the .au files could be present but they are in the wrong folder (there are likely to be multiple folders within the _data folder).

You could manually go through the .au files noted in the log, then cross check them with the .aup file. If the .aup file suggests a file is in a particular folder but it isn’t, put it in the correct folder. That may completely correct the situation or it may not. Unfortunately there is no script to do that automatically.

Otherwise you have to look at each folder that has .au files , sort them by time modified, then while time-sorted, rename them to a logical alphanumeric sequence instead of the random name they have now. That will allow the Crash Recovery Utility to produce (if you tell it there were four channels) four WAV files from that folder. Then repeat for the other folders, import the WAVs into Audacity and try and piece them together. See Crash Recovery.

Either way I would suggest you export a WAV for each track now so that you at least have those. Is re-transferring from the minidisc player possible?

Hey,

Below is the copy of the journal des bogues. It looks slightly different this time. And I cut a lot of lines. it was too long. I suppose you just wanted to see the type of messages. So here they are.

Further to your previous message, I looked in all the “d” folders, but all the .au files I find are the sounds that are still in place in the edit. I just can’t find the missing sounds anywhere. I also come across a lot of .auf files, I don’t know what they are for.

How do I “check the aup to see where it suggests an .au file is” ?

PS: yes, I have all the original sounds in wave on the minidiscs but it would take 3 or 4 months to do this all again. Cause I would have to start the editing from scratch. Actually I couldn’t even do the same edit. I don’t remember everything I had done.

If you don’t get any success with what I’m explaining below, you can make a copy of the .aup file and e-mail it to me together with the complete error log saved as a text file. That might help further discussions. The address is gale_AT_audacityteam_DOT_org (replace AT with “@” and DOT with “.” as for a normal e-mail address). This may be a good idea anyway because for one thing, I don’t understand this line in your errors:

The above suggests your _data folder is called 1er montage" and it can’t be because " is illegal in file names on Windows. Is your _data folder called 1er montage?

If you send the log it would be easier if it was in English (click Edit > Preferences: Interface and change the language to English). To your questions:

Make a backup copy of the .aup then open the original in a text editor. You have at least eight folders “d01” to “d08” inside the “e00” folder in the _data folder. The fourth numeric character in the filename of the .au file (for example, 8 in e0008932.au) tells you that e0008932.au is in the “d08” folder (according to the .aup file). So if it was actually in the “d07” folder, moving it to the “d08” folder would restore it. I’m not saying that has happened but it could have done.

If you have .auf files in the project, that means you imported a WAV or AIFF file into the project without copying that WAV/AIFF into the _data folder. Therefore the project depends for its audio on having that file available in the path you originally imported it from. The .aup file will give the path to the .auf file at “aliasfile=” to right of the name of each .auf file.

If you had made edits to that original audio but the aliasfile was missing, then the waveform would be silenced at that point. But you said the error log shows only orphans and missing data files, so I assume this isn’t a problem.

Another thing you can do if you have a good text editor is to get it to count the number of instances of .au" in the .aup file. If you have the same number of .au files somewhere within the _data folder, then you just have to move them around until they are in the correct folders inside the _data folder.
