Hi, im a complete beginner with recording music and vocals so any help would really be appreciated. I have got a
Samson q1u USB mic and have downloaded Audacity. However when i connect the mic to the computer and open Audacity, the mic is not making any sound, am i missing some sort of hardware or something?

There’s more to it than simply opening Audacity.
Once you’re sure the mic works (and the instruction manual should tell you how to figure that out), you need to open Audacity and set the correct input. Go to the edit → preferences → audio i/o menu and select the microphone as the recording device. You may also have to change the playback device since USB devices tend to confuse your computer by setting your default playback device to the wrong thing.
