Help with couple recordings niggles!!!!

Hi, I am new to this forum and Audacity…I have a couple of questions re-guarding recording. Firstly I can’t record in stereo!. I click on stereo in the audio I/O screen and then go to record but a error message appears preventing me to record, it will only allow me to record in mono (which I have done). Also I have a problem with “top end” distortion on my recordings, I can limit this by reducing the input record level but would like to know if there is another way before i export the tunes.
I am using a MAC with OSX and I am recording through a BEHRINGER UCA202 usb. The version I have got of Audacity is 1.2.3
Any answers would be a massive help to me,

Use the up to date version of audacity from the download page, and see if that helps. Then make sure you have the audio device configured for stereo and a sensible sample rate (44100Hz) and bit depth (16 bit) in OS X.
