help setting up in W10 to record from input

Hi all,

I need to record directly from my mixer to audacity bypassing the mic and just record the music from the cd’s, I have a phono to jack lead, I plug the phono leads to the master out and the jack the mic socket on my laptop, but it just records from the internal mic, I’ve tried turning the micsa off and on, selecting different recording methods but nothing it either records nothing or just from the mics, could someones please help me set audacity up to record incoming sound from the cable on windows 10?

Thank you in advance.

You can choose your recording input from Audacity’s Device Toolbar.

BUT THERE’S A PROBLEM… The mic input on a laptop is a bad match for your mixer’s line-level outputs… It’s too sensitive so you’ll probably get noise & distortion, and it’s usually mono.

You need a USB audio interface with line-level inputs. The Behringer UCA202 is popular and affordable.

just record the music from the cd’s,

If you just want to copy your CDs, use a CD Ripping application and avoid the digital-to-analog-to-digital conversion. It will go faster since you are not “playing” the CD and you don’t need any external hardware. I used EAC for a long time but lately I’ve been using CUERipper which is easier to set up and use.
