I tried to open up Audacity this morning and I got a TempWindow and the Program wouldn’t Launch. So,I Uninstalled it and reinstalled it agin.I put the VST Plug In in and the Lame encoder in Both Plug In Folders in Program Files, and I have a few other Plug Ins I can Put in but I can’t remember where.
I also don’t know (Can’t remember) how to set My ASIO4All driver up the way it was.I screwed everything up man…I need to start again.I installed Audacity 1.37 Unicode. What should I do?
I can’t believe I uninstalled it.I mean it will open now but the Preferences aren’t right.it’s not the way it was.I am going to Preferences and I am trying to change it to ASIO or do I need to?I It has been so long since I have messed with it that I have totally forgot everthing!
Please Help.Would Be appreciated.

Audacity 1.3.7 is obsolete, upgrade to Audacity 1.3.12, but before you do let’s reset the Audacity Preferences.
Locate the “audacity.cfg” file:
Windows 98/ME: WindowsApplication DataAudacity
Windows 2000/XP: Documents and SettingsApplication DataAudacity
Windows Vista and 7: UsersAppDataRoamingAudacity
Open audacity.cfg in NotePad and delete everything except for the line:
NewPrefsInitialized=1
Then save the file.
Now install Audacity 1.3.12
Audacity does not support ASIO,so you mus use it with the Windows drivers for your sound card. Before changing any preferences, check to see if it works with the defaults.
Ok these are the Instructions I followed:
Open audacity.cfg in NotePad and delete everything except for the line:
NewPrefsInitialized=1
Then save the file.
Now install Audacity 1.3.12
I did that but when I went to save the File as I was Instructed,I didn’t know how to save it or where. It wanted to save as a Text File. The .cfg file remained Unaltered. So I went ahead and Installed the New Version.Only Now It won’t let me choose the Input,it is Stuck on Phone Line and I can’t Change it.
I saved the Text File I altered on the Desktop to be safe if you can tell me what to do with it.I also at first saved it by just clicking “save” and not “save as” and nothing happened.I am unsure what is or isn’t different.I don’t notice any Changes, but I haven’t tried to use it yet.I don’t know how or if I should proceed.

Is your computer set to show file extensions? If not, set it so that it does.
Win 7: http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/show-file-extensions/
Vista: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Show-or-hide-file-name-extensions
XP: http://www.fileinfo.com/help/windows-show-extensions.html
Which version of Windows are you using?
What you need to do is just “Save” so that it overwrites the original. The file extension must remain as .cfg but sometimes Windows changes the name to audacity.cfg.txt (and then hides the “.txt” which is why you need the file extension visible).
Have a look for the audacity.cfg file again. If there is a file called “audacity.cfg.txt” just delete it.
Change the “audacity.cfg” file again if necessary and save it in it’s original location with the same name and file extension. If NotePad adds “.txt”, then rename it manually to get rid of the .txt
Don’t worry if you mess this up - Audacity will automatically recreate the audacity.cfg file if it does not exist. We just want the line “NewPrefsInitialized=1” so that Audacity does not read in the (incorrect) preferences from your old 1.2 version (which are written in the Windows registry, thus tricky to get rid of safely).
When you’ve done that, launch Audacity and look in “Edit menu > Preferences > Devices”.
Which options do you currently have selected?
What other options are available?
Which version of Windows are you using?

I did that originally but it didn’t overwrite it,it was the same like I hadn’t deleted anything so I did it again.Same Result. It doesn’t give me the Option to save it as a .cfg file and Overwrite the Original.I found that it was unchanged by re-opening the File In Notepad again.See that’s what i thought it would do,just by Clicking “Save” instead of “Save As” it would Overwrite it.That’s what I thought because when I hit Save it did nothing so I ASSUMED it overwrote it.Then I Installed the New Audacity. It comes and Runs but I can’t get the Input to Change as far as the Sound Source. It is Stuck On “Phone Line”.I am trying to switch to “Mic Volume” or “Line In”.I don’t even have a Phone Line on this Computer.Dial up is gone. Why is it stuck? It won’t let me Change it!I try then it clicks right back over to “Phone Line” Highlited in Blue.
and the Text:“NewPrefsInitialized=1” is in the existing Audacity.cfg file now and it seems the other lines are different, because the Beginning Lines start with the New Version Description so something has Changed.I hope the line I just described earlier is the one I was supposed to have left there.

My Options are My Soundcard (Creative Sound Blaster) and the only other option is the Sound Mapper
I am Running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3
I hope that is what you needed to know.
Thanks,I’ll keep checking for Reply.
When you run Audacity 1.3 will read the audacity.cfg file if it exists.
If the file does not exist, Audacity will look in the Windows Registry for settings created by Audacity 1.2.x
(we want to stop this from happening because you had a problem with Audacity 1.2.6)
If the audacity.cfg file exists and only has that one line “NewPrefsInitialized=1”
Audacity 1.3 will not look in the Windows Registry, but will use the standard default settings.
(this is what we wanted to happen)
When you close Audacity 1.3, it will write those default settings back into the audacity.cfg file
(the audacity.cfg file is repopulated with a full set of default settings).
As far as I can tell, you have done this correctly and Audacity 1.3.12 is now using default settings, but there is another problem that is stopping Audacity from working, so we need to address that issue.
If you have doubts about whether you did it correctly, you can have another go - open audacity.cfg - delete everything except the line NewPrefsInitialized=1 - save the audacity.cfg file (to check - close notepad, then open audacity.cfg in notepad again and check that there is only that one line, but do this check before you run Audacity).
Yes, that’s what I needed to know, and that setting should be correct.
Go into the Windows Control Panel (Start button > Control Panel)
Then go to the “Sounds Speech and Audio Devices”
Then “Sounds and Audio Devices”
(If you are in "Classic view, go straight to “Sounds and Audio Devices”)
You should see something similar to this:
“Sound Playback” and “Sound Recording” should both be set to the SoundBlaster option.
Click on the “Volume” button in the "Recording section and you should see something similar to this:
Click on “Options” and select “Properties” and you should see something like this:
Select (tick) the recording input options that you want to be available.
What options do you have?
Which ones are currently clicked?
Have you ticked any other options?
Assuming that your required input is available, click “OK”, then in the previous screen select that option and give it some volume.
All that seems to be Ok as far as the Audio Devices. The Key Issue here is that I cannot Change the Input (On the Main Audacity Screen) !!It is Locked into “Phone Line” and I can’t Change it.The Former Version of Audacity wasn’t doing this.I Plugged in My Microphone into the soundcard and No Change.I can try to Change the Input but it always will Immediatley go Back to “Phone Line”.I don’t even have a Phone Line!!!I don’t understand! My Soundcard doesn’t have a Phone Line Input. This doesn’t make any sense…I have gone into the Audio Properties in Windows and everything is OK.I know the Card is working because I have another Program I use that requires a Line In Input from My Card and it works fine.Audacity has never done this before.I Simply just can’t change the Input. It is Stuck On Phone Line and it won’t let me change it.
???
Ok I just tried recording and it is Picking up Mic (although the Display still says Phone Line). Now I have 2 More Problems.Sorry Sir,I’m telling you I had all this figured out a long time ago when I discovered this Program.I wish to God I had never Uninstalled it because I am Back to square 1 all over again. Now my Voice is Bouncing Back at me (I know there is a Latencey Isssue). Now when I try to ad Track 2 It makes a Stereo Track instead of a Single Track and the other one won’t play back so I can record with it.The Whole Point is to Multi Track Getting close to real time as much as Possible.Let’s say for Instance I wanted to do an Interview Using All My Voices (Me being all the Characters onn Diferent Tracks).I have been able to do this before on the Old Version and I have even been able to Change the Pitch of one of the Voices staying in time Using the Change Speed Option when Making Track 2 (Track 1 being Normal Voice and Track 2 Being Higher in Pitch while still in Key).
I have covered this before a long time ago,I originally Would play a Guitar Line on Track 1.Then on Track 2 I would add some Vcals.Only I wanted to Change the Voice’s Pitch but I wanted to stay in time and Key.I eventually figured this out,it may even have been you who helped me with all that. The Latency Issue and all of that is brand new again and I can’t remember how I did it before.I only unistalled what I had before because it wouldn’t launch, and then I heard from you that the version I was using was Obsolete so now am trying this new one and I am starting all over again.
So Basically is back to square 1.I thought I saved some of the Help files posted.Maybe they’re in old posts and replies. However the Latency Issue I got help on this Chat Forum in a PC Help room and that was ages ago.
Ok I’ll hang back and wait for a reply.I am stuck.
At the bottom of the “Transport” menu -
Set “Overdub” to “on” (selected)
Set “Software Playthrough” to “off” (not selected).
Go to “Edit menu > Preferences > Devices” and set the number of channels to “1 (mono)”
Does it say exactly “Phone Line” or perhaps does it say “Line In?”
Are you using an English installation of Audacity or is it installed in another language?
i am trying to uninstall audacity from my old computer then i am going to put it on my new computer but i cannot delete it from my old computer how do i do this
Which version of Audacity and which operating system?
