Help! Error Importing .aup file

Hi,

I recorded a piece for the radio a couple days ago, and saved it as a .aup, as you do. But when I went back to open it, it kept saying the file “is an Audacity Project file. Use the ‘File > Open’ command to open Audacity Projects” with the window title of “Error Importing”. I did go to “file” and then “open” to access the file, but the same error message came up. I did try importing it as raw data, but that turned up a very brief silent clip. Otherwise I haven’t done anything to the file aside from moving it around (I had originally accidentally saved it to Documents, then moved it to the Audacity file along with the “_data” file.)

Is there anything I can do to salvage the piece?

Thanks!!

Moving things around can cause problems. If you remember where the AUP file & _data folder was, try moving them back. There is some information here.

In the future, I recommend exporting to WAV and you can also save the Audacity project file if you wish.

What version of Audacity? Please give us all three numbers from Help > About Audacity… .

If you are using File > Open… but see “Error Importing” then the AUP file is damaged and is probably empty. The AUP file can end up empty if you shut down the computer before Audacity can finish saving the project.

To check, open the AUP file in Notepad or your favourite text editor. If you need help you can attach the AUP file to your reply. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1

To Gale:

I’m using version 2.1.2. I opened it in Notepad as you recommended, and it was empty. I’m sure what you said about shutting down the computer too soon is true! I was in a rush to leave the studio and shut down my computer just as it saved so I could have just shut it down too early. I can see if I can record it again and try not to make the same mistake.

Thanks so much!!
