The “adjust tempo without altering pitch” , with the handy/simple % alteration, has totally vanished in audacity 4. I really really need that creatively. PLEASE reinstate that in the normal way. All that appears now in “pitch and tempo” is “pitch” and a rather horrid stretch option. Also: when re-saving an edited aup file back to my busy AUP folder the folder appears empty and there ARE no aup files show2ing to import and edit . It says “no such files ( i.e. aup files!) were found” in my AUp folder. Panic. . Having then resaved the file I am exporting back to the “empty” folder anyway, and then gone TO the folder to make sure…the file HAS saved, AND all my other aup files ARE in the folder. Would greatly appreciate feedback ,reinstatement of the TEMPO adjustment. Thanks all.
Audacity4 saves projects as in AUP4 format. Not backwards-compatible with Audcaity3.
Can open AUP3 projects in Audacity4 , but cannot open AUP4 projects in Audacity3.
aha! Thank you Trebor. I assumed it was simply a “.aup” file (same as if you save a 'jpeg, or .doc file; a consistent appendage regardless what version of “photos” or “office” you were using. SO the “4” is actually part OF the file extension then? Dang. I assume people more techy than me can see some sense in that. I have to say it adds to my annoyance though; I have spent two days doing some intense and time sensitive editing and BEFORE comign to the stage where I go to Tempo % change ..only to now find it is not there. So I NOW want to take all my work so far back to audacity 3 in order to get my tempo facility and finish the job…but if all I have now done in “4” is “not backwards compatible…bugger..” . . I DO understand it is free …so we shouldn’t complain …but even so… I’m currently not amused because it was surely AVOIDABLE. Why not just leave the Tempo & in when creating 4? Oh well..Thanks for the explanation. I will have to start putting money in a piggy bank because it might get to the point where a “paid for” system is less cavalier with their updates, AND remains backwards compatible. Good luck and thanks. Steve
To go backwards you’d have to export the audio from Audacity4 as WAV files, (which are universally supported), then open the WAV files in Audacity3.
Dear Trebor; thank you once again. I feel that this is all rather unwieldy on the part of Audacity, but (as you may have gathered!() I am not a “computer literate person”. Maybe it is genius on their part; I just find it a mess. I am ( like many I am sure ; I am not unique) a fairly competent poet/songwriter and live performer, connectiing with my audience as a fellow human, but I find the interface between the heart and soul and the digital PROCESS of trying to take that to the next level such a ..er… “Heart and soul” destroying process. I guess those who can afford to will simply retain the art and emotion of their work and let a studio engineer deal with all this! Sadly there there are millions who go unheard because we fall at this frustrating fence. Thank you VERY much for helping me to get over this section of the course!
All the best in all you do. Steve
I don’t know how I missed this, but if you right-click on a clip you get a context menu containing the item “Open pitch and speed dialog” where you can independently set the pitch and speed. This is non-destructive but you can render the change through the same context menu, as well as reset it.
Hi billw58 Thank you. My problem is that I have a section of a live performance, two words in fact, where it lags out of time, too slow. I did as you said (right click) on the piece I need to alter and that option is simply still not there. It drives me mad. YOu sounded confident so as a est I right clicked the entire song…and hey presto… you were right! The option DID appear. But I do not want to change the tempo of the entire song. which I am sure I could do in audacity 3. I ONLY want to adjust the phrase but when I highlight the section I WANT to alter the option dos not appear when I right click the section. (I was only ever, naturally, trying to adjust the section I had highlighted so I I never saw the option you are talking about. So I am grateful but do not want to adjust the tempo throughout the entire song; just the short phrase that lagged. cheers
Split the section you want to change into a separate clip.
Hi Billw58. You’re very helpful. but (just in case anyone else is a beginner like me) that still didn’t work; …at first… The pitch /tempo option still did not appear when I right clicked after the “split”. I don’t know if it SHOULD , hence me saying this in case there is still an issue, but when I chanced on the three little dots at the top right of the section, after I hit “split” the option was there. Next issue!
I decided to just test by choosing " increase tempo to 140%". It worked fine. Thank you! So I then went to “edit/undo change tempo”.. but instead of reverting to the original…I had to KEEP hitting “undo”, about TEN times, and it seemed to undo just a tiny few beats at a time? That seems crazy to me. Imagine putting too much reverb on a whole track in one go, and then having to undo it in 100 tiny increments? Thjis is surtely a glitch in the programme?? Or Do you know how to make it a “one click” undo like everything else I have ever known in audacity>? Lastly…I think… when I increased the tempo it naturally made the clip shorter in actual length. I get that. But it then left a gap between the adjusted clip and the rest of the song to the right. When I “Delete” a section on multi tracks I have it set to automatically JOIN all the tracks (synch) together again. But this tempo thing is leaving a gap.? Is there away to make that automatically rejoin the file too, same as when choosing “delete”?? And as said, I do not even understand WHY it would take so many "undo’s " to get back to what was only ONE action ago. Can I also say “sorry”, but you are really helping me. I am sure that you have work to get on with too! If I ever have an answer for a problem you face I would of course help you in the same way…aAlthough given the gulf between our skill levels that is pretty unlikely!
Thanks, Steve
I think that each click of the up/down button generates an Undo event. The context menu has the item “Reset pitch and speed”.
About the gap. I don’t know why it does that.
