Having Touble Recording From Stereo Mix

Hi,

I’m new to Audacity, trying to record from the PC strereo mix but the sign goes flat. I’ve already activated the stereo mix and set it as default for Audacity, with no success. What can I try?

Thanks,
Oren

What, exactly, are you trying to record? Stereo Mix is the step in the middle.

I was trying it on windows media player, and I’d also like to record from youtube

See http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html .

What are the exact symptoms of the problem? What version of Windows are you using?

If you are recording a constant flat line, note that on Windows Vista and later you cannot record silently. What you want to record has to be audible.

On any version of Windows, you can only record stereo mix if the audio you are playing is playing through the built-in sound card. For example, you cannot record stereo mix using a USB headset because that headset is a separate sound device that has no ability to record stereo mix.

If the signal starts strong but fades out, turn off sound effects and enhancements in Windows:

I’m using Windows 7. The signal is a constant flat line and I’m playing the audio through the built-in sound card.
What else can I try?
I’ll also check the manual now, thanks.

Read the Manual and tell us what you have tried after that.

I’m having exactly the same problem when recording with audacity. No sound, just a straight line versus the usual sound waves. Everything was fine until
yesterday when I re-installed Windows 7. I would really like to know what happened.

So I assume from that it is not Audacity’s fault.

As you probably know, a fresh installation of Windows 7 hides all or most of the built-in sound inputs from recording software like Audacity.

Given that it may make sense to go into Windows Sound and enable all the inputs you want to use. This may solve your other problem too.

Thanks for the prompt reply to my message.
I did all the checks you mentioned and made the changes. Now I can record alright but the play volume is very low. Audacity shows only a thin straight line sound wave. I’m not sure
what to do next.

Turn up the input volume using the right-hand slider in Mixer Toolbar:

If you are still recording from stereo mix, play what you are trying to record more loudly.

If you are recording from a microphone, try setting a boost for the microphone in “Windows Sound”.
