Have a music file that needs a speed change- how to?

I will not get into the boring detail of how I found this problem, but the solution is what I need most. I have a couple of music tracks taken off of royalty free CDs from the Music Bakery. When played in any player, they play fine, but when I bring them into Audacity, they do two things. First, there is a loud high pitched pop immediately at the beginning. Secondly, the music plays extremely slowly, much the same as dragging your finger on a record as it plays. This was discovered when I used some of the music as background in a video I am editing. They didn’t play right there either and the video’s run time was streached as well! I also noticed that the hz is 24000 instead of 44100 like all the other RF pieces. I have also had two that were at 32000 hz. I don’t know if this means anything at all, but it is the only thing that separates these pieces from other music that works fine. Is this music changeable in Audacity?

Are you on a PC? Did you rip the music or did you try to “copy” the music from the disks? CDEX does a really good job of ripping music CDs into “real” audio files. On Macs, use iTunes.

Were they real Music CDs? Do they play in your car?

Audacity isn’t a terrific media converter. You might try Super or Switch on a download.

You can also try Set Sample Format under the black arrow to the left of the track. Then Export your new track and then import the new music into your show. I don’t know any way to fix this as a clip already edited into the show.

Sorry about lack of info. PC/Vista 32bit home premium. Also had same problem on 64bit Vista H.P. as well. Music was ripped with MSMedia player/current updates. Experience ripping over 1000 CDs has never produced bad files before this experience. You do make me wonder however that perhaps it was the rip itself… maybe I should re-rip it. Can’t do that today, need to get to my office tomorrow. I’ll follow up.

Yes, these discs are professionally sold by the Music Bakery, a production company. Yes, they play fine in any player either digital or freestanding or car.

Perhaps you are right, however this is an Audacity forum so I did not mention it did the same thing in Sony’s Acid v3, an older program that also enjoys a good performance rating from me. Since the music also performs poorly in the video edit using Ulead’s Movie Factory v6, I would assume there’s something wrong with the music and not the audio editor being used.

If I edit this clip, I’ll simply delete it from the video and redo the soundtrack before rendering final. And finally, I thank you for the solution as presented. I did the SET SAMPLE FORMAT under the black arrow to the left of the track. I set it to 44100 and got an exact duplicate playback in both Audacity, the video and in a simple media player.
