Have a Demonsion 2400 computer and an Older Techniques tape deck Had tried to use a turntable and got same results. Audacities controls go back & forth but my volumes recording in are constant and distorted beyond useage. Also my
output meter only registers one level. Any ideas? Thought it might be preamp but no good there either.
You do know that the signal from the tapedeck/turntable should go to the “line-in” socket, not "mic"rophone socket on the computer …

Yea I hear you and I tried both inputs the stereo or usb input, which is one of the 3, gave me the same results
except it was even louder than the first input. Tried switching out stereo to mono plug and then vice versa on
both jack inputs but nothing made a difference.
I can only suggest that you stick with “line” connections on both computer and audio source, and look for a slider you can turn down in windows recording devices.
Could try windows sound recorder, (in windows “Accessories”), to see if the too loud distortion problem is specific to Audacity.
If not specific to Audacity maybe check your Dell audio driver is up to date … http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_CEL_2400&os=WW1&osl=EN
