Grayed out files

I am working on someone else’s system . It’s way newer than mine.

I saved the .mp3 in different formats and have heard the file on my iPad.

All files are grayed out , why?

Os:Sonoma 14.4.1
Audacity is version 3.5.1.

I have no audio either.

Help please.

Thx, pat

So it’s no longer an MP3? What format is it?

Only when trying to open in Audacity, or in general? Or in your iPad?

I am on my iPad but am working on the Sonoma 14. computer. I should see this on the bigger screen. How?

When I take the mp3 track from the flash drive, in the big mac(!), the files appear
greyed out.

I downloaded the mp3 to the flash drive . The track plays on the iPad and my old mac

It’s the original mp3, and now a wav.

Can I send u the screenshot?

The file is playing but there is no sound

I can open the track and it plays but there is no sound

Hello,

Assuming that your .mp3 file is not corrupted or malformed. Download and Install the FFmpeg file available at:

Why this might help? Maybe your file is label as .mp3 and is not , it could be .M4A or .MP4 which audacity cant open unless FFmpeg is installed.

Hint: in the future is a good idea to duplicate the original audio file and do format changes or editing with the copy.

Lastly, always update to the latest firmware etc. must of the times softwares updates fix compatibility issues.

Thank you

I’m a Windows guy so I can’t help much with the Mac.

But… Is this just an Audacity problem? Can you play the files in your regular music player? (Apple Music?)

If it’s an Audacity problem, go to Edit → Preferences → Modules and make sure mod-mp3 (and everything else) is enabled. There have been reports of these being disabled randomly for no known reason, but I don’t know if it’s happening on Macs.
