Got new laptop but can no longer record properly

Ive been recording with audacity for years and just got a new laptop running windows 11. Ive got Audacity version 3.1.3. I plug in the usb interface via the mixer and what it records just sounds like an echoey, stuttering, muffled mess. Ive played round with some of the preferences but Im a bit of a luddite and am not sure what im doing. This is the third laptop ive ran Audacity on so never had a problem before. Any help would be much appreciated.
