Garbled audio in Audacity playback but fine with VLC Media player

I’m using Audacity 3.0.3-alpha-20210727 and Linux Mint:

I can’t understand what I recorded with Audacity or what others recorded when in Audacity but when I export it as an MP3 it plays fine in VLC media player and other audio software.

Is this a similar problem to the one you posted in November? I thought you had upgraded to 3.1.2.

If the problem persists, it sounds like a playback device setting may be at fault.
