Frequent crashes

After downloading 3.6, I am having at least one crash per day. No bueno.

You can step the machine back to the last Audacity you had. Do you know which one that was?

When you get back to where you were, Tools > Reset Configuration. That should keep 3.6x settings and adjustments from affecting the older Audacity. If that fails, then there is a more serious burn it off, hose it down, and start over process.

Which kind of machine do you have?

You were expecting us to say “Push this button, right?”

Do you use external drives? Any external drives? Audacity hates that.

No external drives. I am hesitant to burn it off and hose it down, as I have several audiobooks in production right now…

Are you sure there isn’t a button?

So you did an update in the middle of a job—or multiple jobs?

Are you saving your work as Audacity Projects?

In real life, reading a presentation or chapter goes something like this:

Read your chapter in a quiet, echo-free room.

Stop.

File > Export the work, errors and all, as a WAV (Microsoft) protection file.

Edit the work to get rid of word-o’s, stumbles, stutters, tongue ticks, and other errors. No effects.

Tools > Apply Macro > 36Audiobook-Mastering-Macro.

ACX-Check. If it passes and you like the way it sounds, Export WAV (Microsoft) Edit Master and go on to the next chapter.

Also note nowhere in there did I Save an Audacity Project. Search the forum for “Please Help. My Project will not open.”

If your chapters will still open, Export them as perfect quality WAV (Microsoft) sound files. Once the Audacity system starts becoming unstable, it’s not pretty.

Once you have all the exports done, close Audacity and then copy them off to an outside drive.

Am I frightening you yet?

There is another New User error where someone tries to read the whole book as one file.

Don’t do that.

It may be this bug that Muse are currently workig on:

When testing this I found that if I saved an empty project before recording then I didn’t get the crashes.

Peter.

So there’s your button. Post back if it works.

Another note. A crash can leave trash lying around and make another crash more likely. You could try a Clean Windows Shutdown.

Windows normally uses “Fast Startup” where it leaves some of the system alive during shutdown.

Remember this is a forum. We have to work this into something we can tell somebody else.

I haven’t had a crash since I started saving projects before editing?
