Does anyone know of a good free collection of instrument sounds that I can download? My current collection is too small, and many of them don’t sound like the instruments they’re supposed to be, especially the strings.
At one time there was a comprehensive set of individual notes recorded from classical string instruments in the BBC on-line archive. Not sure if it’s still there, but may be worth a look.

You will also find sets of samples if you open up sound-font files (which can be done on Windows using the free “Vienna” sound-font software).
