Forum Email...?

I see questions about this have already posted.

In a recent message thread with TonkDa, they claim they received an email message from me with comments, and then their email response failed. I sent no such email. I wanted to keep their discussion on the public forum.

In the legacy forum, we could email posters in the background as needed. I understand I can’t do that in the current forum. And yet, it appears the forum has seen it fit to email someone with my comments …???

What’s up?

The message comes from the forum itself, not from you. And it has a “no-reply” sender’s address or reply-to header.

Messages to others seem still to be possible. Click on a user’s name and you’ll find a button “Message”. However, this probably will not send an email, but a message to you in the forum (upper right, next to the “search” icon).

Yes, I know about that one. That doesn’t help when the poster, who may be upset or confused is much more likely to respond to an available and familiar email rather than go digging in the forum housekeeping. Particularly because all this may be happening across multiple time zones.

I didn’t know the message system was there until recently.

To bring this around, we have no idea where TonkDa’s incoming email came from?

I received a forum email for your response, which has the following headers (among others, of course):

From: kozikowski via Audacity Forum noreply@audacityteam.org
Reply-To: kozikowski via Audacity Forum noreply@audacityteam.org
Received: from a11-122.smtp-out.amazonses.com ([54.240.11.122]) by vimdzmsp-mxin02.bluewin.ch Swisscom AG with ESMTP id w5NztZqmJQGfEw5O0tD7uh; Sat, 22 Mar 2025 21:24:04 +0100

This received-header tells us that the forum runs on an Amazon server. And the From and the Reply-To headers are both “noreply”, so nobody can answer via email. But I am not sure whether I had enabled this type of information when I signed up to the forum, or if it needs to be disabled if I don’t want to receive it.

Fascinating. I wonder if this goes to everybody in the thread, or just the last poster up. Or maybe only goes to the thread author from post 1?

What happens if I respond to someone half-way up the thread? Is there a muffled explosion as the system tries to figure out where to put everything?

What happens if I don’t want to send these?

I was a party to bringing a beginner voice actor in Hollywood (an actual place) on-line and billing actual money from his apartment on La Brea. It took us a year. It was the longest post on record. I was sorry to see that post go when we transitioned to the new forum. I can only imagine posting near the end of that thread and bringing the email service to its knees just by hitting Enter.
