Floating reference

I am using Linux Mint 20
I have version 2.4.2 installed from the software manager. I had 2.3.3(I think). It also froze so I removed it and installed 2.4.2.
I have been using Audacity for several years. Today when I opened it up from the software center I got the “How to get help” screen in front of the main screen. It’s frozen. When I kill the screen the whole program shuts down. So I tried it from the command line. This is what I got.

(audacity:86728): Gtk-WARNING **: 12:33:52.725: A floating object was finalized. This means that someone
called g_object_unref() on an object that had only a floating
reference; the initial floating reference is not owned by anyone
and must be removed with g_object_ref_sink().

The same “How to get help” screen came up in front of the main screen. Again it was frozen.
Where can I find this floating reference and how do I delete it?
Where do I find the “Jack Server”?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

“Jack” is one of the sound systems available for Linux. By default it is not used on Linux Mint.

I’d suggest the first thing to try is:

  1. Revert back to Audacity 2.3.3
  2. From the hidden directory:
    /home//.audacity-data/
    delete the three files:
audacity.cfg
pluginregistry.cfg
pluginsettings.cfg
  1. Launch Audacity

I uninstalled the 2.4.2 version and the only place I can find the 2.3.3 is Fosshub.
So I downloaded that.
I am very new at using the command line. I am using the (https://github.com/audacity/wxWidgets/blob/v3.1.1/docs/gtk/install.txt) to install the 2.3.3.
I made an empty directory named /buildgtk.
WhenI get to the next line (> …/configure --with-gtk), I get (bash: …/configure: No such file or directory).
I have no idea where to get the gtk directory.
Help?

Audacity 2.3.3 should be available in the Mint / Ubuntu repository. You can install it from the Software Center.
