Flat line usb turntable connected to audacity on mac: problem unsolved

This is a frequently repeated topic, apparently still without a general solution. I am running Audacity 3.4.2 on a Macbook Pro, Sonoma 14.2.1. I have a new USB turntable and on the Mac see an input signal, but no sound from the inbuilt speakers and no indication of input on Audacity.
I have searched the forum and followed whatever advice I found, but nothing works for me.
Some current settings details: on Mac, System Preferences>Sound>Input, selected “USB AUDIO CODEC.” When a record is playing I see an input level. In >Output, selected “Internal Speakers.” In Finder>Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup>Input, selected “USB AUDIO CODEC2 2 ins/out,” “Format: 2 ch 16-bit integer 44.1kHz.” For Audacity, Preferences>Devices, settings are “Host: Core Audio”; “Playback Device: Built-In Output”;“Recording Device: USB AUDIO CODEC”; “Channels: 2 (Stereo).” In Preferences>Quality>Sampling “Default Sample Rate” is 44100 Hz; “Default Sample Format” is 16-bit.
