Hello
This is my first post, hope you can help.
I’ve recorded a couple of vinyl albums using Audacity, when I return to insert track titles etc, i find the files wont open. When i open Audacity, I click file, open, navigate to the relevant file, then click. Nothing happens, eventually a message appears next to tile of the file (not responding). Ive tried to open another way, by navigating to the file using windows, then right click - open with Audacity but the same thing happens. The files were recorded using Audacity 2.0.4, when this logjam happened i upgraded to 2.0.5 but it hasn’t made any difference.
Previously, i have made several earlier recordings using 2.0.4, they were exported to Mp3 files and sound great on my ipod. These earlier files wont now open either.
I’m completely stuck, hope you can help.
Are these MP3 files or Audacity project files (AUP)? How long is the audio in the files?
It could be a problem with your Audacity temporary folder. Please try reinstalling Audacity but half way through installation, choose the option to reset preferences. This will set the temporary directory to the default location in your Users folder. Please see: How do I reset my Audacity settings? .
Hi Gale
Thanks for the advice, I uninstalled 2.0.5, and deleted audacity.cfg Then re-installed 2.0.5 from the beginning.
All the AUP files now open, so that is a result. Incidentally, i think the files take longer to load using 2.0.5, I record at 192000 hz and the files are around 3.8gb to 4.0gb.
Thanks for all your help
Peter
I’m glad it was fixed, though please note that if you ever used Audacity 1.2 on that computer, 1.2 writes its settings to the Windows registry and 2.0.x versions still look there for some settings. In that case, deleting audacity.cfg might not have solved the problem if the problem had been in the 1.2 settings.
To make sure 2.0.x has factory fresh settings it’s better to reinstall it as suggested and enable “Reset Preferences” in the installer. This replaces the .cfg content with just:
NewPrefsInitialized=1
and that string tells Audacity to use factory settings and ignore any 1.2 settings there may be in the Registry.
Which version did you have before? If it was 1.2.x, yes that version is faster at fitting large files to the window than 2.0.x. It’s a long standing problem but there are several causes rather than one. I don’t think 2.0.5 should be slower than 2.0.4.
Hi Gale
I followed your advice, and the files load perfectly and very quickly.
I think the audacity program is really excelent, some time ago i bought the honesttech product, Audacity is far better when you are familiar with it. I still use the hardware box which goes from my hifi amp to the usb socket in my pc.
Thanks for all your help
