File Properties

I recently installed Audacity 3.7.1. Windows 10 File Explorer now can not edit the .wav files metadata that are exported from Audacity 3.7.1. How can I edit the metadata in File Explorer?

I don’t think Windows Explorer can do it but I think Windows Media Player has some metadata editing capabilities. (Most player software can edit tags/metadata).

I use MP3Tag. (It works on all of the popular formats, not just MP3.)

Audacity can also do it (Edit → Edit Metadata) but Audacity doesn’t support album artwork and you have to re-export the entire file, which means if you have a lossy format (like MP3) you are going through an additional generation of lossy compression… And it’s just not that convenient if you are not otherwise editing the file.

Note that metadata for WAV is not as well-standardized or as widely supported as with other formats. FLAC may be a better choice as long as your player supports it, assuming you want to remain lossless. And FLACs will be almost half the size of WAVs.

Yes, MP3Tag gets my vote too.

In Windows, you can edit the metadata in a file by…

Right clicking on the file, going down the menu to Properties, then clicking on the Details tab. Any metadata that is already in the file can be edited there.

If you want to add new metadata fields, or you want to edit multiple files at one time, use MP3Tag.
