Feature Request: Pencil selection and Bezier Handles for VOLUME and PAN tools

Hello, everyone.

I would like to suggest adding Bézier manipulators (handles) to the clip gain points.

By default, clip gain points should follow a smooth curve, and it would be great if we could right‑click on a point to set its value manually in dB.

Additionally, I suggest renaming the “Clip Gain” tool to “Volume” and adding a PAN tool, so that we can create smooth PAN automation points with Bézier curves in the same way as with the Volume tool.

I really appreciated the new ability to zoom in on the vertical ruler using Ctrl + mouse wheel — that was very welcome! Another idea: how about adding a pencil tool for selections in Spectral View mode? With it, I could select the spectral region of an ambulance siren and delete only that portion, which is difficult to achieve with just the rectangular selection.

I eagerly look forward to seeing these suggestions implemented in future versions.

There’s a difference: Gain is applied before effects, volume is applied after effects. So if you have a limiter at, say, -3dB, increasing the gain would push more stuff into the limiter’s working range and the resulting signal would remain at -3dB, whereas increasing the volume wouldn’t change anything about how the limiter is operating, but the resulting signal would be higher up (eg -1dB, if we increase the volume by 2dB)

Dear Audacity Developers,

  1. Steps to reproduce: “In Audacity 4 Alpha 2, split a clip with Ctrl+I. The cursor jumps to the beginning of the split clip.”
  2. Expected behavior: “Same as Audacity 3.x — the cursor should remain in the same position after the split.”
  3. Actual behavior: “Cursor moves to the beginning of the clip.”
  4. Impact: “This disrupts multi-track workflows, since I lose my working position.”

The place to post Audacity feature requests is here. My workplace has it blocked, so I can’t verify that address.
