export selected turns into export all [SOLVED]

using El Capitan and 2.1.2
if I select a section using the cursor and choose export selection, it works
if I select a section using the digits at the bottom of the screen and choose export selection, it morphs into export all
what am I doing wrong?

How you are moving from Selection Toolbar to Export Selected Audio? If you are clicking outside the track, this deselects the track and so removes the selection from the track. Then Audacity selects all when you Export Selected Audio.

It works OK for me in 2.1.2.

But if you see File > Export Selection as you say, you have a bogus 2.1.2 not supplied by us, so that could be the problem. Obtain 2.1.2 here: Audacity ® | Download for Mac OS.
