I’ve been working on a project and after saving over a version of the exported mp3 file a couple times, the file now only ever saves as 3kb. Restarted Audacity and PC to try and fix, but file still isn’t exporting properly, even when copying audio to a new instance of audacity and exporting from it. I’m pretty new to audacity so I apologize if this is an obvious fix, but I’m just unsure why this is happening especially when all of my export settings have remained unchanged and aren’t compressing the file in any way.
Do you still have the Audacity project file? If so, how big is that?
Mark B
I do, currently it’s 1.1Gb.
Thanks for that. Have you tried exporting as something other than mp3 such as WAV or FLAC to see if you have the same outcome?
Mark B
I did, sorry I should have mentioned that originally. I at least tried exporting as a WAV and it came out to be 1kb. I think right now it’s literally only saving the text data for the files and nothing else.
I’m willing to have a go if you want to send me your project file.
What do you think? Which version of Audacity do you use?
Mark B
I hadn’t considered doing this, I just downloaded to a USB and tried doing the same on a different laptop and unfortunately the same issue happened. I prefer the older version of audacity but updated to the newest version and was able to actually export it from there. I think maybe somehow my project is corrupted in the older version, I’m not sure.
I think older versions are more robust than recent ones. I have 3.3.3 on a Windows 7 laptop and 3.7.3 on everything else. Pretty much every version in between was not up to scratch for me. Have you tried the Audacity project tools on your corrupt version? How do you want to proceed from here?
Mark B
Do you have to export the audio as one big file?
You could try cutting it into smaller chunks, pasting each into a new copy of Audacity, and save them from there.
I assume it plays OK as an Audacity project? Do you have the project saved (as an AUP3 file)?
I actually suspect the project file is corrupted rather than Audacity itself…
Try opening a known-good audio file and see if you can re-export it (to a different folder or with another name). That will tell you if you can export.
