Using Audacity 2.1.2 on Windows 10.
Weekly, I use Audacity to prepare the weekly sermon for our website. After editing and compressing, I export it as WMA @ 48kbps (sounds cruddy, I know, but I find that it’s an adequate junction of file size and quality).
Since the sermons run in series, I would often choose a file name that is similar to another existing file (xxxxx Pt.2 MMDDYY, where the “xxxxx” would be repeated). At some point when typing the name (best guess, upon hitting the space bar after the first word), Audacity shuts down immediately.
I have found that using a different name seems to be a workaround. The problem, as well as the workaround, has been consistently repeated several times.
Each time, Audacity has recovered the file and all has been well. For filing purposes, however, I prefer to use the similar file names so that they are arranged together alphabetically.
Thanks for the report. A very few people have reported crashes on Windows 10 using the file save or file open dialogues, but we have never been able to reproduce them. What word exactly is XXXXX? I tried with the word “Sermon” without having any crashes.
Are you selecting the similar name when it appears in the dropdown and overtyping that, or ignoring the suggested names?
What build of Windows 10 do you have? Press the Windows key then type “winver” (without the quotes).
Have you tried resetting your Preferences settings?
If Audacity produced a debug report ZIP file when it crashed, please attach the file. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1
