I just installed Audacity on a new Win7 PC. When I click record, I get the following error: “Error while opening sound device. Please check input device settings and project sample rate.”
I have done everything I know to do and got no change.

This is expected on Windows 7 because it disables all or most of the sound inputs.
So you cannot record until you enable the inputs in Windows “Sound”.
