error importing project

So today I was working on a project that consisted on an mp3 file and a few recordings. Finally I wanted to do something else so I saved the project. I came back later and tried to open it, through File<Open but it says there was an error importing the data and I should try using Import Raw, so I tried this also and it comes up with a blank file and everything that I worked on it just gone. If anyone could help that would be much appreciated because as of right now im completely lost. Thanks!

I have Audaicity 2.1.1 and Windows 10. I have the same problem trying to open a project. It gives me a error importing message. Data file is in the same location. I just can’t get it to open as a project. Is there someone who can help me with this?

It does not sound like exactly the same issue, so I started a new topic for you. A new topic is always better. For one thing, aaron_a will not by definition be on Windows 10 because his post was back in January.

There is no “data file”. There is a _data folder (with underscore).

If you see “error importing project”, this usually means you are using File > Import > Audio… . That won’t work. Use File > Open… and open the AUP project file.

If you are already using File > Open…, please attach the AUP file and we will have a look at it.

Please tell us more about what you did before saving that project. Was it a recording? If so, had you edited it, or did you simply record, save project then exit Audacity?

Did you turn off the computer, or did it crash while you were saving the project?

It’s a recording. I saved the project. My computer was acting crazy, so I had to reboot it. Not sure if I closed audacity before I did the reboot. No editing was done.

It’s a recording. I saved the project. My computer was acting crazy, so I had to reboot it. Not sure if I closed audacity before I did the reboot. No editing was done.

If you suspected the computer was not responding properly to commands, it would have been better to force quit Audacity in Task Manager than ask it to save a project in those circumstances. Then the data and the temporary project file should have been preserved, assuming they were correct in the first place. When you restarted Audacity it would try to recover the unsaved recording.

You can try to recover the AU files manually from the “datktp5_data” folder.

I’m having a similar issue. I had done some edits, saved the project, exited Audacity, and shut off my computer. Now I can’t get the audacity project to open. I get an error saying that I need to use the file > open command, but when I do that, I get the same error. When I try to open a recent project, the file isn’t there because I have restarted my computer. Any ideas???
