editing preferences in 2.3.0 causes crash/ unable to restart

First off I have Windows 10. I downloaded 2.3.0 through this site. When I opened the preferences I went to the effects tab. I changed the behavior of the effects tab to list by type and name. With 20 selected in the box below. I selected ok…the circle spins then in the upper left of the window it looks like this: Audacity 2.3.0 (Not Responding). Then Audacity abruptly closes. When I try to re open Audacity I get the splash screen then nothing. I opened the task manager to observe the process.

  1. Clicked on Shortcut
  2. Splash screen comes up and the process in task manager shows
  3. Splash screen disappears then after 10 seconds process disappears in task manager

This happened once before after installing the program (ver. 2.3.0) only that time I changed various preferences. On that adventure I rebooted the computer (HP Envy) and Still had that issue.
I did uninstall 2.2.2 before installing 2.3.0
Ran a registry scan. All residuals of 2.2.2 deleted.
No such issues encountered in 2.2.2

It’s possible that the “Preferences” have become messed up. The quickest way to reset Audacity completely to “factory defaults” is to (shut down Audacity if it is running, then) find the hidden folder:
"Users<username>\AppData\Roaming\Audacity"
and delete (or move or rename) the three files:

  • audacity.cfg
  • pluginsettings.cfg
  • pluginregistry.cfg

On launching Audacity, you should be greeted by the “Welcome” screen.
