Editing of lexical sound files for talking dictionary

Does anyone know whether there are standard guidelines - or does anyone have recommendations - on how to edit individual lexical sound files (i.e. word pronunciations) for use in an electronic (or ‘talking’) dictionary?

  • What is considered a good space of silence to leave before and after the word?
  • What would be a good maximum volume, comfortable on the ear?

Really would appreciate some suggestions. Just by the way, I have found Audacity fantastic for my purpose, and wonderfully easy to figure out.

There are several different talking dictionaries and as far as I’m aware there is no common standard. You will need to consult the documentation for the talking dictionary that you are working with, or ask on their support forum (if they have one).
