I wouldn’t say I’m technologically challenged, but pretty much, yeah -
Looking for the absolute simplest, bonehead way I can “program”/ plunk out drums in audacity for pre pro purposes. It’s all going to be replaced, so I’m not looking for amazing quality or anything.
What program should I use? External tools? Looking for suggestions.
It’s not clear what you want to achieve here. Audacity is an audio recorder and editor so, if you play drums you can record yourself doing that. However, you spoke of programming drums which you cannot do in Audacity. You can program drum patterns using something like Hydrogen which is free but you will still have to record them somehow if you need to get them into Audacity.
I have a live drummer I use for later in the process so I do a couple of things while scratching out an arrangement. First is install an Audacity Rhythm Track at the desired tempo. I then play a Guitar/Vocal Guide Track to define the song sections for replacement. At times I go to a youtube page Talent Progressions (Drum loops) (I am sure there are others) and find a track with the rhythm and tempo I am considering. I use loopback recording in Audacity to capture the loop and copy and paste for duration. Then Play my guide track to drums rather than click. More work on a throwaway track for sure, but sometimes worth it.
