Dynamic Compression Question

I do all of my recording projects at higher resolutions at 24/96 and higher, and do not use limiting or compression at any stage. I enjoy and prefer the full dynamic range for my own personal listening at these higher resolution formats. However, that doesn’t translate well to standard CDs for others to enjoy, or for use in my car. In those cases there is such a thing as too much dynamic range. So, I would like to learn more about the Compressor tools here in Audacity to be able to increase the overall volume level without destroying good recordings by snuffing the life of them.

I guess I am asking for some help here on a good place to start with Specific settings that are very moderate that will increase the overall level while still maintaining a decent dynamic range.

There’s a plug-in called “Chris’s dynamic compressor” that was designed specifically with this type of application in mind. You can get it here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Compressor
I’d suggest trying it first with the default settings and then work from there.

Thank you.
