You need a line-input (usually color-coded blue on a regular soundcard).
If you have a laptop with only mic-in and headphone-out, the [u]Behringer UCA202[/u] is a popular and inexpensive interface with line-inputs. Or, there are lots of higher-end interface with switchable mic/line inputs. Do NOT buy a regular “USB soundcard” because they are like laptops with only line-in and headphone out.
The mic input on a laptop will “work” as long as you select the external microphone as your [u]Recording Device[/u] but don’t expect good quality. If your laptop has a single combo mic/headphone connector you’ll need a [u]TRRS adapter[/u] to make the “microphone” connection.
