Drag and Drop Import Broken v 2.1.2

On Mac OS 10.10.5
Working in Audacity 2.1.0, not in Audacity 2.1.2

Desc:

I can no longer drag an audio file from the finder onto a project and have it import. When I drag the file over the project, nothing happens. Reload etc doesn’t seem to help.

Alas, there is great sadness and time loss in my workflow.

Thanks. This is already noted in the 2.1.2 Release Notes: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Release_Notes_2.1.2#Imports_and_Exports.

As it says there, you can still drag most file types to the Audacity icon in the Dock, or to the Audacity.app icon where Audacity is installed.

This is related to a security update. Someone found a way to execute code, hidden in an audio or video file. Since the average user will never suspect these files to carry malware, the update was badly needed.

I haven’t seen any audio app development team taking notice. A fix would require some work, but is possible. So, it’s understandable Apple needed to plug the hole.

A recent new hole in the Sparkle update library was fixed by some developer teams*, only hours after the CVE went live. But a lot of popular apps are still vulnerable. This isn’t as bad as the hole in audio files, as an attacker would need to be on the network between your computer and the development team’s server. The Sparkle team has no update yet. Maybe they consider this to be a developer error.

  • Sequel Pro, CyberDuck…

I doubt it. Why would iTunes and VLC still accept audio files by drag into the app?

That’s a good point, Gale.

And I already don’t remember how exactly I came to that conclusion, so maybe it’s wrong…
