Distortion reduction

I have an audio file that was originally recorded with some peak level distortion. In Audacity, the waveform is not clipped but on playback the decibel-o-meter goes into the red in these places.
Is this something Audacity can deal with or would it require the original recording software to fix?

Clipping is the most common type of distortion and it can be hard to tell. Audacity is just checking the peak level and it “shows red” for clipping when the peaks go over 0dB or if there are multiple 0dB samples in a row. It’s not looking at the waveshape and you can get false positives or false negatives.

There is a Clip Fix effect (Effects → Noise Removal and Repair → Clip Fix). It may, or may not, help. It’s impossible to know the original wave height or shape.

If the “original” recording is damaged it may not be fixable.

MAny thanks for the reply. The original distortion is very obvious and why the musician allowed this to happen is a bit of a mystery considering a, he knows what he’s doing and b, it’s a piano piece.

An example of it is around 3:40.
