Distorting a sound in an analog manner

Hello all! Long time user of Audacity - first time question asker, as I’ve never had anything beat me that I couldn’t figure out myself.

I am in the process of putting on part of a radio play for a University project, namely “Napoleons Piano” from “The Goon Show”. The whole show is here:

As part of this, I want to recreate the distorted sound of Big Ben that you hear during the performance, here:

Back in the day, the sound of Big Ben would have been on a reel to reel tape player, and the operator would just have put their hands on the reels to speed them up or slow them down as needed.

I don’t have access to that technology anymore, so the question I put to you all is: How would you go about doing that in Audacity? There are filters to speed up and slow down things, but at least as far as I have been able to tell, they cannot do this dynamically, as in the example.

It’s going to be fun to make my own example of this, and I look forward to making something like this happen.

Any help that can be provided would be most welcome.

Many thanks,

Joseph

You could use a Time Track

I had a quick look at that. That will do nicely, I think! You know, I’ve never heard of this before, so thank you :slightly_smiling_face:
