Disable automatic clip numbering when pasting

I’ve searched for an answer to this, but I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere; my apologies if I’ve missed it.

When you copy and paste a clip onto the same track, Audacity automatically renames the clip to add a number at the end; e.g., copying “Clip” and pasting it creates “Clip.1”. Do this enough times and you can end up with a dizzying number of digits, like “Clip.1.3.2.1.3” and so on.

Is there a way to disable this behavior of automatically adding numbers to the end of copy-pasted clips?

Thanks.

No.

In Edit > Preferences > Recording there is a way to name newly recorded trackes.

You can use “Set Clip” in Extra Menu: Scriptables I - Audacity Manual to assign a name to any clip at any specific location. You can set up a macro to do this: Macros - Audacity Manual

Understood, thank you. I hope the option to disable automatic numbering gets added in the future.
