I have a mono file( .wav) consisting of a speech recording with background noise (bus engine). I would like to eliminate or minimize the background noise, to make the speech part better understandable. How do I do this using Audacity 1.2.6. or your new beta version? My operating system is WndowsXP.
You might be able to make use of the equalizer effect in Audacity 1.3.12.
Pull down all the frequencies below about 100Hz and the clarity of the voice should pick up a little.
Or possibly Effect > High Pass Filter, and choose 100 Hz. All we’re doing is getting rid of the bus rumble. That’s about as good as we can get.
Beyond that, you’re pretty much dead. Sometimes you can play games with Vocal Removal and other similar tools, but those all work on a Stereo show. In general, you can’t take apart a mixed show. In music, this means you can’t take the violins out and leave everything else. In your case, you can’t delete the bus without damaging the voice.
