default audio spectrogram

I am using Windows 7 and Audacity 2.1.3. On opening Audacity the window that opens has a white center bounded below and above with grey areas. The center whit area limit is +/- 5 db. A signal louder that that extends into the gray areas. This is fine for recording but I cannot use it for editing.

How do I restore the default window which opened in all previous versions of Audacity?

It sounds as if you may have inadvertently selected the “Multi-tool”.
The quickest way back to the normal “Selection tool” is to press F1 or click the “Selection tool” button.
