cutting out small piece in continuous recording

I have Mac 10.13.6 and Audacity 2.1.3. I have imported an old audiotape that has in it lots of noise and skips and am trying to simply take those out. I want the subsequent edited recording to play continuously. When I shade the appropriate section and delete that section it is taken out but then when I try to replay the recording it ends at the place of the edit and does not continue to the remainder of the recording. I’ve reread the editing instructions many times but I’m still not sure how to do this and end up with a continuous “new” version.

Looking for help–I’m not particularly technological so step by step would be helpful. Thanks.

Audacity will play all of the audio you “shade”, (a/k/a select )
i.e. if you have made a selection & press play it will stop playing at the end of the selection.

If you click on the time-line it will play from that point in time to the end …
