Here is what happens.

I open Audacity in Windows 8.1. I can try it in the 8.1 view or from the desktop. I get the same results.
I open the file.
I play the file.
After a random period of play, it freezes.
Then I may or may not get the Windows notice of termination.
I flee until I realize that it is the program that is being scheduled for termination, not I. I return to my machine.
I restart the program and eventually have the same thing happen.

There seems to be a correlation between the use of the selective play tools and the crash incidence. It seems like if I just play the file I have no problems. It seems to be a problem when I attempt to play and replay a segment of the file.

OK, folks. Nevermind!

I found the solution after searching under the specific issue. Quite a few experience this problem.

The solution is to follow the same link as for the LAME (why did they use that acronym!?!) software. There is a separate link for the FFmpeg import/export tool. Once I installed this, I was all better again.

It seems like it is connected to installing or running LAME (why did they - you know) I did not experience these problems with the files I was running until after I used LAME to convert them into mp3 files.

The moral of the story is, if you install LAME (why…) you must also install FFmpeg import/export. Otherwise you will get the errors noted in my initial post.

It should be possible to run either add-on without the other. Audacity will open MP3 files without any additional software, but won’t make any new ones. Many of the advanced sound formats need FFMpeg to either open or save.

Lame Ain’t an MP3 Encoder.

It’s a recursive joke.

Koz

Installing FFmpeg will remove the FFmpeg “errors” from the Log but won’t affect your freeze/crash.

If you are not 1Man, you must be logged in as admin to access that user’s space. Were you playing fast games or performing any other intensive computer activity while you were playing audio in Audacity?
