it’s just loud crackling and voice isn’t recorded. However, when recording with internal mic, it is clear and multiple tracks are recording and playing back perfectly. I’m starting to think I need a new microphone, although it is strange that it recorded one track perfecty yesterday, but just static today.
Its unstable. The noise is analog, not digital. It’s random trash, like the microphone is making it up as it goes. Unstable can also mean it changes with temperature or other weather conditions.
There are tones coming from the power system (you’re in the UK, right?), but everything else is random junk.
Recording a voice isn’t easy. The volume after capture has to be boosted a thousand times before it leaves the microphone. This is what happens when the microphone gets it wrong.
We never did set which microphone this was. Does it plug in like this one?
Unplug it and plug it back in again. Make sure it’s all the way in. Do that to the computer side, too.
There’s the worse possibility that the USB connection at the computer is bad.

Hi, mine is more basic
The usb connection in the computer is working well with other external equipment. I’ve tried unplugging and plugging back in several times but no difference. I don’t understand why this mic worked for the initial track yesterday, and is now is recording random trash. Yes, I’m in the UK. Thanks for your continuing help
I tried recording again - same problem, but when I tapped the mic, it recorded it!

Doesn’t count. Would you know if your external keyboard, for one example, skipped a key here and there? Unless you have another analog device, you’ll never know if the USB service is damaged.
Again, doesn’t count. A microphone converts physical motion to electricity. If you held up your hand and somebody yelled at it, nothing would happen. But if somebody hit it, it would move. They’re different.

Good news! I bought a new mic and crackle has gone! However (afraid so!), it’s recording the voice but missing bits of it.
