Couldn't find the project data folder & Could not load file

I am a brand new user, and I’ve saved several files incorrectly, I guess. I tried to reorganize where the files were, and now they can’t be opened at all.

When I try to open a file, I get this:

Couldn’t find the project data folder: “A Million Dreams with all tracks recorded_data”

After I press Okay, it’s followed by:

Could not load file: “C:\Users\Sara\Music\A Million Dreams with all tracks recorded.aup”

There was an answer to this question about three years ago, but I couldn’t make much sense of it, and I tried several of the suggestions and couldn’t get anything to budge.

Can anyone help me save 6 hours of recording work? I would be SO grateful.

This is an Audacity Project.

The _DATA folder is a basket of tiny sound files and the AUP file is the list of instructions that tells Audacity how to put it all together into your show. You must have both.

People who “clean up” or “reorganize their work” run into this problem. The AUP file and the _DATA folder must be in the same folder or location for the show to open. Double click the AUP file and it should launch Audacity and open the show.

It’s a bit worse if you also decided to rename some of the files.

Can you put everything back where it was when you finished the recording?

If you did rename some of the work, you can go inside the AUP file and see what the original names were.

Open the AUP file in a text editor (do not save anything) and read it. This is the AUP file for the project in the illustration.

Yours won’t look quite this well organized. This one was tarted up for the picture.
